Loss of a limb is a major life trauma that requires much adjustment, but it is not the end of life as you know it. People with limb differences continue to do many amazing things. Here are some resources to help you, or a loved one, with your special needs.

Amputee Coalition of America The Amputee Coalition of America (ACA) is a national, non-profit amputee consumer educational organization representing people who have experienced amputation or are born with limb differences. The ACA includes individual amputees, amputee education and support groups for amputees, professionals, family members and friends of amputees, amputation or limb loss related agencies, and organizations.

National Council on Disability The National Council on Disability (NCD) is an independent federal agency making recommendations to the President and Congress on issues affecting 54 million Americans with disabilities. NCD is composed of 15 members appointed by the President and confirmed by the U.S. Senate.
The Access Board The Access Board is an independent Federal agency devoted to accessibility for people with disabilities. It operates with about 30 staff and a governing board of representatives from Federal departments and public members appointed by the President. Key responsibilities of the Board include: developing and maintaining accessibility requirements for the built environment, transit vehicles, telecommunications equipment, and for electronic and information technology, providing technical assistance and training on these guidelines and standards, and enforcing accessibility standards for federally funded facilities.

This web site was initially created for readers and supporters of the alt.support.amputee (ASA) amputee newsgroup to view and learn about prosthetic devices, but all amputees and family members are welcome here.  Newsgroup messages can also be posted and viewed for free at groups.google.com/(formerly known as Deja.com).  Important aspects of being an amputee are available here: selecting the right prosthetist, achieving comfortable prosthetic fit, resolving residual limb pain, phantom pain, insurance definitions of medical necessity and more.
