Beverly

|
My Story: |
I was
born with a bone disease that affected nearly every bone in my body. I
have tumors that caused problems with my development. Most of the "chondromas"
as they were called concentrated on the right side of my body. As I was
growing taller my right leg wasn't growing at the same rate as my left leg
and was unhealthy and deformed. After several unsuccessful surgeries the
decision was made to amputate my right leg above the knee. |

What I most want new
amputees & their families to know: |
Your
life and the lives of the people around you will change dramatically. How
much is up to you and them. Don't be afraid to ask for help. Don't be
afraid to ask to be left alone. You teach others how to treat you by your
actions and your words. And don't forget to cry. It is very important.
|
|
What I most want
others to know: |
I have
been handicapped all my life and I spent my teen years adjusting to my
amputation. But as I have grown into the woman I am today I know I am
completely comfortable in my own skin and I know who I am. |
|
My personal tip for
new Amputees: |
Understand your fears. Have faith in
what you can do and who you are. And always ask lots and lots of
questions. |
|
Major accomplishments
since limb loss: |
My
marriage to my wonderful husband Tom. |
